Local MP opens new Beech Hill Memorial Hall

Over a hundred people turned out on Saturday August 6th 2011 to mark the official opening of the new Beech Hill Memorial Hall.Many were specially invited guests, singled out because of the outstanding contributions they have made to the fundraising and building, either through donating money, time or services, resulting in successful completion of this community project. 

Fundraising commenced three years ago when it was decided that restoration of the original hall, opened in 1921, wouldn’t be viable.  £180k has been raised through a combination of grants, donations from individuals and fundraising events organised by the management committee.  

Newbury MP and Minister for the Natural Environment, Richard Benyon was guest of honour.  He unveiled a plaque and presented the Chairman of the trustees, Charlie Carter, with an Energy Performance Certificate, awarded to mark the high levels of efficiency and sustainability achieved in the design of the building.  A group of local residents cut the ribbon and the Revd Beatrice Pearson performed a blessing.  Richard Benyon commended the management committee and the village for demonstrating exemplary levels of community spirit in bringing off such an ambitious project and Charlie Carter thanked all who had contributed, especially the management committee and trustees of the hall.
